Intermediate Cluster's Sale Day!

As an additional activity for our Intermediate Cluster, they had a Sale Day! This activity combined the skills they learned in Math, Art and HELE. They also included Earth-saving practices, like using recyclable materials for the art works they sold, selling reusable clothes, toys, and other materials, and segregating the trash.

It was truly an exciting event and one that we may repeat for the following school years!

HSG Foundation Month

Picture
February is a very special month for the school. This is the time when our founder's vision of a school that would cater to the needs of diverse groups of children became a reality.

The theme for our school's 14th foundation year is Spiritual Intelligence, which has truly been a guide whenever our school hits a bump on its journey. This is why the month was started with a Holy Mass, presided by Fr.Jonathan Bitoy, followed by various classroom activities that allowed the students to express their gratefulness for the people around them. The celebration was concluded with a Recollection Activity for our Graduating Class last February 27, 2016.

First Holy Communion

Picture
The students received God in their First Holy Communion last February 13, 2016, at the Los Desposorios Chapel in Panay Ave, Quezon City.

This is the most awaited event in our young Catholics' lives as they attend their Catechism classes with Sister Mechelle Carcasona, Carm'Ol every Friday afternoon.

We congratulate all our new communicants and may God continue to bless all of you!

We also want to thank our priest, Fr. Harnell Paulin, and the choir for celebrating that special day with us.

HSG Family Fitness Day

This January, we brought back an exciting physical activity for the family, a Family Fitness Day!
Picture
Five teams competed in different games reminiscent of games shown in the game shows Amazing Race and Minute to Win It. Parents, students and teachers had fun playing the different games together. They even had a simple Zumba session led by Teacher Ralph to stretch their muscles and strengthen their endurance further.
It was indeed an amazing day. Parents and students all went home tired from the physical activities but with smiles on their faces for the quality time they spent together in this event.

Special thanks to our friends from Metrobank
who spent the day with us to help our kids start saving their money even at their young age.

HSG's Adaptation of The Sound of Music!

Picture
To end this amazing year with a festival of talents, we celebrated the music and theater skills of our students through an adaptation of the classic, The Sound of Music.

Each class sang and danced their hearts out to the well-known songs of this timeless musical, which brought out the smiles on the audience's faces. They fought back their nerves as they stood tall and proud on the huge stage of the Marian Auditorium at Miriam College.

We are really proud of our students who tirelessly practiced with their mentors almost every day and made this show a very successful one! Congratulations to all our performers, mentors, and volunteers!

We would also like to thank our special mentors who helped us prepare the students for this production:
Mr. Albert Magcalas and Ms. Crystal Rodis - our Music Opportunity Mentors
Ms. Icy Salem - our Creative Writing Opportunity Class Mentor, Scriptwriter, and Theater Consultant
Ms. Bea Lesaca - our Dance Opportunity Class Mentor and our Creative Director
Mr. Renz Borja - our Voice Mentor
and Ms. Justine Pena - our Theater Coach and Trainer

Parenting Seminar: PsychoSpiritual Parenting

Picture

Last December 5, 2015, our school held a PsychoSpiritual Parenting Seminar facilitated by Fr. Jonathan Advincula Bitoy, CMF, a Claretian Missionary who is a faculty member of the Institute of Consecrated Life in Asia (ICLA) and Assistant Director for Claretian Communication.

During the seminar, Fr.Jonathan discussed about how a child came to be; that it started when two very different people with different characteristics and personalities decided to love and commit their lives to each other, and create another human being who is capable of love. He differentiated men and women's way of showing love through the symbolism shown by our physical makeup, so that we may better understand each other and know how to live in harmony with each other despite our differences.

The parents who participated also shared their desire in improving their children's spirituality and shared tips and experiences with each other on how they approached this topic with their children. Fr.Jonathan emphasized that enhancing our own spirituality and being models of the values we want our children to develop is the best way to reach that goal.

Giftedness Week 2015

Picture
This year's celebration was focused on visual-spatial intelligence and the various artists that have made their mark in our country and all over the world.

For one whole week, the classes were assigned an artist and the students in the class were encouraged to make an interpretation of the artist's famous masterpiece and to make their own masterpiece. At the end of the week, their works were exhibited proudly in different areas of the school.

The students also had the privilege of watching an artist at work! Mr. Cesar Delos Reyes, a sculptor and a dad of one of our students, gave a demonstration in making a 3-dimensional self-portrait using Plaster of Paris.

The students learned much from various artists and from each other, and they had a blast as they expressed themselves using different art forms.

Thank you, Mr. Delos Reyes, for showing our students a glimpse of how an artist works!

United Nations Celebration 2015 with a twist!

The United Nations Celebration was held last October 27, 2015. It was made extra special by the different stories each class told in their classrooms.

We also added a new twist into the mix: combining the UN Celebration with Halloween! Since the students will be missing out on the usual Halloween party this year, we had the students wear their costumes and go visit each classroom for a "treat". Some classrooms only gave treats to those who listened to the stories, others gave treats for those who answered a puzzle, and still others gave treats for everyone who simply entered their room!

It was a unique, culture-rich and literature-based celebration of this annual event. The students all went home with a mind filled with stories, a heart filled with joy, and a mouth filled with candies!

Preschool's Fun Day by UP SPED Council

The Special Education Council of the University of the Philippines held a Fun Day with our K-2 students last October 10, 2015 at HSG's school grounds.

These aspiring Special Education teachers conducted games and other activities with our students. Our preschoolers were all smiles as they sang different nursery rhymes, made animal masks, and reenacted the story about Noah's Ark.

It was truly a fun day for all the students, both from HSG and U.P!

Math and Science Fair 2015

Our annual Math and Science Fair was held last October 5, 2015, focusing on the study of our universe. With the help of Mr. Bamm and Mrs. Roch Gabriana, the parents of one of our young gifted students, we were able to impart knowledge about the planets, the stars and other celestial bodies, Earth and space rocks, and more. The kids enjoyed looking through the telescopes, finding out how they weigh in the different planets, seeing different types of Earth and space rocks, and listening to Mr. and Mrs. Gabriana as they explain about the universe in our makeshift planetarium.

Parenting Seminar: Brain-Based Parenting

Picture
Another parenting seminar was conducted last September 26, October 10 and 24, 2015. It was entitled "Brain-Based Parenting Seminar" and aimed to introduce parents to some basic concepts of developmentally appropriate communication with children to help enhance human relationships, parenting and family life. It was facilitated by Mrs. Toni Dy, a psychotherapist and counselor and a parent in our school.

Many of the parents went home feeling invigorated and ready to strengthen their newly-created neural paths and improve their relationships, especially with their children.

Watch out for more parenting seminars in the coming months!

Parenting Seminar: Online with Training Wheels

Due to the advancement of technology, the school gave a parenting seminar last August 15, 2015 to help parents be better equipped in guiding their children in the proper use of technology. It was entitled Online with Training Wheels and was facilitated by two of our school consultants and ICT Education Practitioners, Mr. Joel and Mrs. Tessa Yuvienco.

The seminar focused on the basics in customizing device settings and best practices on how to guide their children to use the Internet safely and effectively, avoid the dangers of social media, and identify kid-friendly sites.

The parents participated well and even shared their own experiences and knowledge regarding what worked for them in terms of setting boundaries for their children in the use of technology.

Tuklas Pilipinas! Linggo ng Wika 2015

Last August 28, 2015, the students of Headway School for Giftedness held its culminating activity to celebrate the natural beauty of the Philippines. Each class was assigned a province and to showcase its culture and beauty through their costumes and a diorama of its famous landmark. The older students even shared their knowledge of their assigned province to the younger students as they toured the different dioramas around the assembly area.

There was also a Book Fair provided by Lampara Books, where students were encouraged to read and buy different storybooks written in both English and Tagalog. They even provided a storytelling animated video for the Preschool and Primary Level students to watch and learn from.

Anti-Bullying Seminar 2015

The students at Headway School for Giftedness had a short but meaningful activity last August 7, 2015, aimed at teaching them respect and reminding them of the anti-bullying policies in school.

The students had fun as they learned about the different kinds of bullying and how to prevent it from happening. They also completed our Respect Tree by writing what they would do to show respect and to prevent bullying in school on cut-paper shaped into different-colored leaves.

Through this activity, we hope to empower the students in creating a peaceful school environment where they can all feel safe, loved and cared for.

Artastik! Art Enrichment Program 2015

The first batch for the Art Enrichment Program started their class last August 1, 2015 with Ms. Mary Ann Uy, a former Assistant Principal at Headway School for Giftedness and now an Art Teacher and Art Club Moderator at Our Lady of Peace School in Antipolo City.

The Art Enrichment Program's twelve sessions is divided into three basic medium: Painting, Mixed Media, and Clay Sculptures. Aside from skills in art, students also develop their artistic expression, patience, responsibility, attention to detail, and frustration tolerance.

HSG students, alumni, and even non-HSG students are invited to enroll in this program!
The second batch schedule will be announced soon after the first batch's classes end.

Here are some of the pictures from the Art Enrichment Program:

Field Trip 2015

Headway School for Giftedness, together with Mitan Tours, had its annual field trip last July 25, 2015. The students, with their teachers and companions, had fun and learned as they visited three different places near Metro Manila:
Picture
1. Amazing Show Theater
The Amazing Arts Group showcased their talents in Shadow Play, Poi Dance, Sand Art, Mask Changing, and the Tron Dance.

The students also got to experience the Poi Dance and Sand Art during the intermission with the help of the performers.

2. BioReasearch
The students saw, and even touched and fed, various animals in the huge compound of Bioresearch. They learned about the arapaima or the biggest freshwater fish, how bees make honey, how to train racing pigeons, and much more. They even got to bring home a fish of their own for free.

3. Enchanted Kingdom
This well-known amusement park is a site for experiential learning, where students explored the various attractions and rides that are based on real science and technology as well as historical and mythological concepts. This was also a chance for the whole family to spend quality time with each other and for the children to apply and learn more social skills.

The students really learned a lot from you. Thank you!

HSG Summer Music Recital 2015

Picture
After almost a year developing their musical gifts, students at HSG had their recital last May 30, 2015 at the Claret School of QC - AVR.

Students, old and new, shared their musical skills in piano, violin, guitar and in singing. They wore their best smiles even through the difficult parts of their piece.

Paintings by the students who attended the Visual Arts workshops were also on-display around the venue.

It was truly an entertaining recital. The audience enjoyed the show and the music teachers were really proud of their students.
