Group Socio-emotional skills training (gsst)

Do you want your aggressive child to learn self-control, your shy child to be more outgoing, or your socially isolated child to learn how to make friends? GSST can make these things happen to your child.

What is GSST?
The Group Social Skills Training (GSST) is a cognitive behavioral therapy-based to help children and adolescent improve their social skills so they can become socially competent.​

​Who can benefit from the GSST?
Children and adolescents who want to or need to improve on their social skills can enroll in the GSST and benefit from it.

How is the GSST done?
The GSST is done in a group setting to facilitate the practice of social skills through social interactions. It runs for 12 months. The complete program has 6 modules focuses on the cognition, affect, and social aspects of the self namely: Self-Awareness/Self-Regard, Self-Regulation, Stress Management, Social Perception, Social Communication, and Problem-solving. It uses different therapeutic strategies such as psycho-education, modeling, rehearsal, role playing, relaxation and mindfulness techniques, etc. Cognitive restructuring, positive behaviors, and healthy emotions are reinforced through assignments, feedback, monitoring, and periodical assessment.

Who are involved in the GSST?
The success of the GSST for children and adolescents relies on the teamwork of trainers from the fields of clinical psychology and special education, parents and teachers who monitor the trainees at home and in school respectively and give feedback to the trainers, and the school administrators who provide support to the implementation of the GSST and assist in the communication process between the parents and the trainers.

What are the expected outcomes from the GSST?
GSST graduates, depending on the case and level of functioning, are expected to develop awareness and understanding of the self, self-esteem, behavioral management skills, emotional regulation, thought and impulse control, and problem-solving skills.

Social Skills Training develops social competence that has significant improvement in the following areas:
  1. Academic performance and attitudes towards school;
  2. Attitudes about the self and others;
  3. Socio-emotional skills;
  4. Social interactions;
  5. Conduct at home, school, and in the community; and
  6. Level of happiness and sense of fulfillment.
