"The HSG Odyssey: A Retro Sci-Fi Experience!" December 14, 2013

“The HSG Odyssey: A Retro Sci-Fi Adventure”, the school’s 2013 show was staged last December 14 at the UP Film Center. The HSG Odyssey tapped on the element of fantasy to convey a world beyond imagination: exploring the wonders of the universe by fusing art, music, dance and costume play into a unique theatrical experience.
Inspired by renowned filmmaker Stanley Kubrick and his legendary “2001: A Space Odyssey”, the HSG Odyssey captures its grand vision, awe and spectacle to remind the world what it was like to dream like what Kubrick did during his time. Through the discotheque music that emerged in that era, the audience was brought back, in a fun and exciting way, to that momentous time in history.

The HSG pupils represented inhabitants from the different formations that compose the solar system, showing what life would have been like in there. The Nursery and K1 Classes were the sun inhabitants, or the Sunnians, who danced to “Disco Inferno” and “September”. The Grade 1A Class danced to the tune of “Stayin Alive” as Mercurians!
The Grade 5 class presented a swing number (“Xanadu, Can’t
Help Myself and Heaven Must have Sent You”) donned in unique fish-like
costumes. Meanwhile, the Grade 2A class
represented planet Earth and danced to the tune of “Funky Town” and ‘Shake Your
Groove Thing”! The Grade 4 Class came in Martian soldier uniforms and danced to
Village People hits. The K2 Class looked like robots as Asteroidians, dancing
to Blondie’s “One Way or Another”!
Jupiter became a “Boogie Wonderland” when the Grade 2B class came in psychedelic costumes and danced to the beat. The Saturnians, or the Grade 1B class, presented Abba hits and came in glittery attires!

In the meantime, the Uranusians (Grade 3A) class and the Neptunians (Grade 3B) class presented Jackson 5 numbers and various seventies hits! The grade 6 class, as Plutonians and Dwarf Planet Inhabitants, capped the performances with a swing rendition of “Can’t Take my Eyes off You” and “Last Dance”.
HSG Music Mentor Justine Pena, who plays Cinderella in Newport Theater at Resorts World, serenaded the HSG families together with her students from the Music Opportunity class.
It was indeed a magical night for the HSG community! Thanks to all HSG families, relatives and friends for making this event possible!
