Special Class Mentors
Arbie Pineda
Arbie’s organization, the University of the Philippines Music Circle (UPMC), was his venue to launch a career in music education. He would conduct guitar and music theory lessons whenever there was an official UPMC workshop clinic, and sometimes even at the organization’s tambayan while killing time during any regular school day. Having done this countless times, he has developed his own approach and even wrote an e-book on basic guitar playing and theory – now considered a suggested reading among UPMC guitarist applicants and novice members.
From there he would continue on to teaching English as a second language to foreign adults and kids, an experience he found to be very fulfilling.
Arbie knows how boredom can become a barrier to learning, and believes that learning should be fun. One of his personal convictions about learning is inspired by a scene from the 2000 movie “Road Trip”, wherein the character Rubin says: “I can teach Japanese to a monkey in 46 hours. The key is just finding a way to relate to the material.”
During his spare time he surfs the net for anything interesting and useful, plays computer games, plays the guitar, and teaches their family Labrador – named Sam – new tricks.
